Dave Wibberley and Malcolm Heathfield tackled the Cape-Epic starting in Knysna on 28 March and finishing in Cape Town on 5 April. Riding for Team Adroit they used the event to raise funds for a skills development initiative within the industrial automation sphere.

Dave, managing director of Adroit Technologies explains, "It is a very common thing internationally when tackling such events that they are used to raise awareness and funds for various charities and other causes. I canvassed colleagues within the industry and found great support, our goal was to raise R50 000 and I believe we have a commitment in excess of this."
Recognised as the Tour de France of mountain biking the nine day event leads aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world through the unspoilt nature of the Western Cape and up approximately 16 000 m of climbing over some of the most magnificent passes in South Africa. 966 km in nine days, three days of more than nine hours in the saddle, three days of over 8:30 – it truly is an epic journey.
“A lot of people asked if I would do it again and the answer is absolutely – if it did not take six months completely out of your life. Our training consisted of about 4000 km at an average of around 12 hours per week. An enormous sacrifice from family, work and self, but it was certainly all worth it, especially arriving to the sight of Lisa and little boy, Ryan, at the Lourensford Wine Estate. We met great, interesting, crazy people along the way, and had time to reflect on how much time we waste sweating over the small things,” Wibberly enthuses. “An experience like this really helps you see life in perspective.”
With 1200 riders representing over 40 countries the Cape-Epic is a truly international event, with the current champions always eager to defend their titles.
