Intelligent vehicle solutions - IVS
January 2008
Sensors & Transducers
The ability to embed sensors and computing capabilities in virtually every system, subsystem and component has yielded an extremely valuable by-product: a vast amount of previously unavailable information about the vehicle, its location, its performance and the condition of its systems.
Mining, processing and applying this data in a way that creates value for operators is what the emerging science of intelligent vehicle solutions (IVS) is all about. The primary emphasis of IVS work in the past has been targeted at creating smarter vehicles and providing pilots and drivers with better realtime information that can be used to make faster and smarter decisions. For the most part, the data - and its value - stays on the aircraft or vehicle.
Honeywell believes the technology can create even more value for operators if a broader range of decision making is supported. This means taking data off the vehicle or aircraft so people other than the pilot or driver can access it. For instance, trend monitoring using past performance and maintenance data can accurately predict when scheduled or unscheduled maintenance will be needed. As the technology advances, more routine tasks on board vehicles will be handled automatically, relieving crewmembers of workload so they can concentrate on their more important operational, safety and mission responsibilities. Eventually, IVS will expand beyond the scope of a single aircraft or vehicle.
The organisation has industry-leading experience in systems integration, advanced sensors, satellite communications, maintenance and repair, wireless gateways, abnormal situation management, and other technologies needed to deliver the full potential of Intelligent Vehicle Solutions.
