The National Laboratory Association of South Africa held its 27th Annual Conference at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre between 19 and 21 November 2007. This event has become the highlight of the laboratory world in South Africa and Africa and this year's event attracted more than 240 attendees from over 12 countries representing laboratory activities from many diverse disciplines, including forensic, medical and other analytical sciences as well as the physical sciences.
As has become traditional for the T&M Conference a range of papers, tutorials and key addresses were presented with attendees being able to get an update on many different issues relating to the laboratory.
The keynote session was given by Ms Elsabe Steyn, dti on 'Leveraging the South African Technical Infrastructure in support of South Africa's National Industrial Policy Framework (NIPF)'.
Additional talks on South African organisations and strategic directions included:
* 'Where to from here; a view from the National Laboratory Association', Steve Sidney, NLA.
* 'The NMISA and Metrology in Africa', Dr Wynand Louw, NMISA.
* 'Research and Development at NMISA', Shravan Singh, NMISA.
* 'The Impact of Testing and Calibration for Sustained Economic Development in South Africa and the SADC Region', Dr Laurraine Lotter, Chemical and Allied Industries Association and Chair of SANAS.
One theme that ran through all of these presentations is that South Africa is making rapid progress in updating and implementing national regulations covering metrology, units of measure, standards, and accreditation.
