ScopeMeter aids network fault-finding

November 2007 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Based on the Fluke 124, the Fluke 125 ScopeMeter has a number of additional test capabilities to extend the working area of the 120 Series.

Communications testing

The 125 features industrial network bus health testing for CAN-bus, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Industrial Ethernet (both Coax and Twisted Pair), AS-I bus, Interbus-S (RS485), Modbus (RS232, RS485), RS232, RS485, ControlNet and user-defined systems.

The user has continuous acquisition of signal with a high/low level and edge speed indicator. The instrument automatically calculates data transmission speed and gives good or bad indications for a range of parameters such as rise and fall time, amplitude, bias level, pulse width and distortion.

This allows the test engineer to check signal quality on industrial networks and to identify faults like missing links, incorrect line loading, line interrupts, short circuit conditions and reflections. The meter also supports fault-finding at the hardware level in bus systems.

Harmonic analysis

The ScopeMeter can perform harmonic analysis up to the 33rd harmonic for fault-finding in electrical systems. It also supports a wider frequency range than typical power quality testers, yet does not stick to the PQ-protocols (which give definitions only for 50 and 60 Hertz systems).

Power measurement

The instrument measures Watts, VA, VAR and power over a wide frequency range. This helps in testing the output of motor drives and frequency converters. However, the 125 is not a PQ-analyser.

Resistance

The 50 Ω range offers a 50,00 Ω full scale readout and a resolution of 0,01 Ω. This assists in fault finding motor windings and making comparisons between known good and suspect systems.

Effective voltage

The Vpwm (effective voltage) of drive output value allows the user to measure the true effective output voltage as the motor perceives it on variable speed motor drives.

Plain text identifiers

User named setups with plain text names improves ease of use of the 125, allowing the user to give plain text identifiers to test-data when stored.

Over and above offering all accessories that come with the 124, the 125 accessories also include an i400s current clamp.
