Programmable inductive analog sensor

February 2001 Sensors & Transducers

Inductive analog sensors have traditionally been used in combination with an analog switch box for programming and providing the switching functions. Balluff has now developed an analog sensor with switching outputs integrated into the M18 housing. These devices have leads for the supply voltage, three programmable switching outputs as well as an analog output. The sensing distance is between 1 and 5 mm. LEDs are used to indicate the switching state. A special programming unit allows the switch points to be independently set by means of a teach-in procedure.

Integration of the switching function also makes the new device significantly more cost-effective than the traditional approach. Savings are also realised in wiring and space freed up in the control cabinet, where the remote box used to reside.
