Ethernet peer-to-peer I/O

September 2007 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

An easy way to link plant inputs to outputs, when there is no requirement for a PLC or HMI software to control the process, is to use Acromag Ethernet peer-to-peer modules. With Acromag's i2o technology users can view the I/O data on their PC's Web browser or display it on inexpensive instrumentation (panel meters, lights, horns, etc).

Using Ethernet networks, the modules can be used as extended signal conditioners. For example users can transfer sensor inputs that are located at a remote point A (be they six channels of 4-20 mA, 0-10 V d.c., or a similar set of analog values or 12 digital signals), to process output signals at another point B, such as a PLC or PAC I/O marshalling point.

The modules have a built in Web page, and are configured using a standard web browser such as Internet Explorer, so there is no need for complicated programming software. Each unit can be set with an IP address. This allows the modules to be connected to existing infrastructure. Wireless solutions can also be offered. The digital modules allow for bi-directional communication.

A simple application would be, for example, a valve control loop using 951EN modules which have both analog inputs and outputs. The valve position represented by a 4-20 mA input signal to module A is mapped to the analog output channel on module B which is then connected to a PLC analog input. Control signals from the PLC travel in the reverse direction from the PLC back to the control valve using the same two modules. The PLC analog output module is wired to the analog input of module B which is mapped to the analog output channel on module A. This is then connected to the valve positioner of the control valve.

Acromag offers a large range of modules for Profibus, Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, LonWorks, analog signal conditioning, limit alarms/trips, and more.
