Cat 6 patch cable provides surge protection
June 2007
Electrical Power & Protection
DEHN, a leading manufacturer of lightning protection and surge protection systems, has introduced the DEHNpatch patch cable for use in Category 6 installations. The device provides surge protection of all cable pairs and can be used universally according to EN 50173 up to 48 V d.c. DEHNpatch is easy to install and to retrofit as it is simply plugged-in between the patch panel and the active component, such as a switch, instead of a conventional patch cable. Typical applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, ATM or ISDN and VoIP and PoE (Power over Ethernet) can be protected.
With its fully shielded design DEHNpatch can be used in shielded and unshielded networks. Its width is similar to a RJ45 socket allowing up to 24 DEHNpatch devices to be installed in one series and integrated into a 19" rack.
The DIN rail mountable supporting foot with snap-in device provides safe earthing. For single applications, a piece of DIN rail and a fixing device are supplied, while for multiple applications in 19" distribution boards, an optional mounting set is available.
DEHNpatch operates according to the LPZ (lightning protection zone) concept at boundaries 0B - 2 and higher. The device meets IP 20 protection requirements and it has a 1 ns response time. It is supplied with either a 3 m or 5 m cable. Other lengths are available on request.
