Arthur Meyer, a mathematics teacher from the Shangri-La Academy in Gauteng, was selected recently to participate in two Honeywell Space Academy camps in the United States: first in 2005 at the Space Camp and again in 2006 at the Advanced Space Camp.

Meyer said: "The opportunity these camps afforded me in terms of exposure to science and technology has been immense. Having visited the Kennedy Space Center and viewed the enormous amount of technological research and development that is conducted there in conjunction with Honeywell, and participated in activities such as space walks and diving training has made me realise that the teaching of maths, science and engineering-related subjects at South African schools needs greater emphasis."
"The camaraderie amongst the teachers, who had been selected from around the world, was extremely positive and the opportunity to knowledge-share is still active today," Meyer said.
The Space Academy programme is designed to help teachers inspire the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. Honeywell is committed to providing students and teachers with programmes, experiences and resources that enhance the way science is taught and perceived.
The Space Academy programme has already resulted in 450 teachers graduating from over 26 countries.
