Level Measurement & Control

Level measurement in control

May 2007 Level Measurement & Control

The pulp and paper industry places heavy demands on the effectiveness and availability of instrumentation systems. The installed equipment must therefore be robust, precise, have long-term stability and be easy to service.

Vega offers a range of rugged level measurement devices designed to withstand pressure shocks, abrasion, moisture, vibration, pollution and condensation. Tough housings protect the fully potted electronics from the moist, humid ambient conditions and the harsh cleaning processes typical of this industry. To measure up to the increasing demands on operational reliability, SIL (Safety Integrity Level) classified instruments are available.

Maintaining a constant level in the bleaching tower is important for the quality of the bleaching process. To ensure this, Vega's continuous level measurement radar sensor works in conjunction with a discharge control. The Vegapuls 68 has special dynamics that ensure reliable measuring results even under difficult conditions in the bleaching tower.

The capacitive level switch, Vegacap 64 is used as an additional protective measure to avoid overfilling the bleaching tower. This level switch prevents spillages and blockages and ensures process continuity.

The Vegapuls 68 is also used in level measurement in the chip silos where its high dynamic range means that measurement works reliably even during filling. This sensor can also be used in the bark silos as well as the aeration tanks following the digester.

A further ultrasonic sensor, the Vegason 61 detects if the paper loading height on the conveyor belt is exceeded, as well as any possible blockages.

Finally, accurate level measurement inside a pulper ensures the correct proportion of pulp to process water. The pressure transmitter Vegabar 64 with its rugged CERTEC measuring cell makes this device well-suited for this application.
