NET Protector surge protection modules

September 2006 Electrical Power & Protection

Surgetek's NET Protectors are designed for 19" (483 mm) rack mounting in NET Protector enclosures that may be equipped with up to three surge protection boards to protect switches, hubs and telecommunication systems such as Ethernet, Token Ring, E1 and ISDN lines. The modules are also capable of protecting Class D Gigabit Ethernet components to EN 50173 requirements as well as Ethernet 100 Base T/TX/T4, ATM 155 Mbit/s, 100VG-Any-LAN, CDDI, 10 Base-T (IEEE 802.3) and EURO-ISDN.

The NET Protector surge protection modules require the space of only one vertical module and are generally installed into terminal boards. They are inserted as a patch panel with surge protection or as a retrofitted device for patching between the patch panel and the device to be protected.

The protective boards not only provide a different protective circuit, but also a different connection. While the protected output is always an RJ45 unit, the input can be an IDC termination or RJ45 unit. The IDC termination unit is often used for the first equipment in a new installation, which does not include any patch panel. The RJ45 unit is described as a retrofitting unit for existing systems as it is patched easily between the patch panel and the active component.

Only 1U (45 mm) in height with a depth of 80 mm, the NET Protector surge protection modules are available in 8-, 16- and 24-way formats and are fitted with eight-way shielded connectors. The NET Protectors offer a 155 Mbit/s data transmission rate and a response time of 1 ns.
