For the two laser diffuse sensors OHDM 12 and OHDM 20, designed by Baumer Electric, no background can interfere with the proper detection of the object at any distance within the sensing range.
Normally diffuse sensors, even those with background suppression, have a substantial shift of the switching point between black and white at the end of the detection range. Sometimes poorly reflective objects are not detected at all. This makes it impossible to detect dark objects against a light background when there are only a few millimetres behind the object. With the OHDM 12 and OHDM 20, problems of this kind can be overcome. With the smaller OHDM 12, the detection range reduction for black is less than 1 mm (<1%) over the entire detection range (120 mm), and with the larger version OHDM 20 less than 45 mm (<3%) at a distance of 1,5 m.
With these sensors, the smallest steps, thinnest objects or the smallest depressions can be detected from a great distance even with extreme differences in colour.
