Portable NIR analysers for chemical applications
July 2006
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
LT Industries' Iso-Chem systems are portable near infrared (NIR) analysers with remotely triggered testing probes. They are designed to provide confirmatory chemical analyses in seconds, inline. The analysis system is small, fast and inexpensive, and because raw material calibration libraries are often transferred from plant to plant, Iso-Chem includes a parented system to assure seamless transfers.
The Iso-Chem material monitor includes a rugged NIR spectrometer, a 2 m fibre-optic cable, a remote testing probe, LTVista software and a remote modem diagnostic package. All that is required is a computer and the system is ready for operation.
The spectral range is from 1200 to 2400 nm with a scanning speed of five scans per second. The scanner is resistant to extreme temperatures and vibration and the sample probe is both flexible and strong. Optical resolution is high, noise levels are low and internal wavelength standardisation is frequent. Additional features include long, protected fibre-optics, low noise fibre and probe, remote operation and easy-to-use software.
The Iso-Chem system includes a rapid-scanning NIR monochromator with a built-in dynamic wavelength referencing system and intersystem calibration-match hardware. It also includes an ergonomically designed intelligent test probe with remote scan and reference capability, remote sample status report and Bubble-Shedding optics. Iso-Chem systems are very affordable and all LTI sampling interfaces will couple to the monochromator and the scanner mechanics are completely process compatible.
The Iso-Chem system uses LTI's patented probe technology to assure the best possible results from diffusely reflecting slurries or liquid materials. The system is free from interface limitations, so any of the LTI probes will work in conjunction with it and the system includes both powder probes and high-temperature/high-pressure models.
An Iso-Chem monitor system can adapt from passive materials in shipping containers through slurries to bench and pilot-scale reactors. It is a raw-materials analyser, which can do double or triple duty when required.
The remote sampling probe terminates in a polished, chemically passive stainless-steel tube with a sapphire window. When the sample material is powdery and not subject to electrostatic 'cling', wiping three successive times with laboratory tissue will suffice. It is also possible to vacuum the probe tip. Solvent rinsing is required only when the test material adheres stubbornly to the metal tube.
