2006 SAPICS Conference rated as 'out of this world'

The 28th Annual SAPICS Conference & Exhibition for supply chain management professionals drew to a close last week at Sun City. The organisers have announced that delegates rated this year's event as 'outstanding', with a line-up that featured an opening presentation by Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni, as well as the added attraction of a genuine piece of the moon.
In his address, Mboweni was optimistic about sustained growth in South Africa, commenting that the macro-economic environment was 'extremely favourable' for this growth. The moon rock, which was on loan from NASA, was on display at the conference as a symbol of one of the greatest logistics challenges in history - a 500 000-mile round trip to the moon.
This year's SAPICS Conference & Exhibition attracted more than 850 delegates, featured over 60 speakers and more than 50 exhibitors, who showcased the industry's latest products and technologies.
For the second year running, keynote speaker Ron Ireland received the Toyota Trophy for the Most Innovative Paper presented at the conference. US-based author and management consultant Ireland is regarded as a pioneer of the retail industry standard called collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR), having first defined Supply Chain Partner Collaboration while working as IT strategy manager for Wal-Mart.
