Practical quality experiences for laboratories and industry

July 2006 News

The National Laboratory Association is taking the opportunity of informing all laboratories, staff and suppliers that the annual T&M Conference will take place this year between 23 and 25 October at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre.

This ideally placed location will afford attendees the occasion of seamlessly integrating a wonderful learning experience coupled with comfortable surroundings and facilities. In addition the location is well placed for visitors coming from afar since it is directly across the road from Johannesburg International Airport.

The Technical Program is beginning to take shape with a good balance between calibration and testing focused papers and presentations. The organisers have made every effort to ensure that this conference is more than merely an academic exercise, but rather one that has practical relevance for members of the laboratory community.

Subjects such as traceability, estimating uncertainty of measurement, accreditation, etc, will be given adequate exposure and will afford attendees the opportunity of adding to the debate.

To date there have been nearly 10 contributions from outside of South Africa and the attendance of these individuals will help to provide local members of the community with an opportunity to learn from their international counterparts.

Papers submitted cover the following areas:

* Traceability of both physical as well as analytical measurements.

* The role of proficiency testing in laboratories.

* Ethics and the laboratory.

* Estimating uncertainty of measurement in various disciplines (medical, analytical, calibration).

* Reference materials.

* Tutorials.

* Legal metrology - the regulatory arena.

* Accreditation.

* Quality.

* Measurements in the automotive industry.

* Agriculture.

Attendance at the conference is also an ideal networking opportunity and there are various evening social events which have been included in this year's event. From past experience and feedback this is an aspect which is often overlooked, but most attendees indicate that the value of attending is often as much or more in making new contacts and sharing experiences, as well as attending the technical sessions.

Exhibition

The Test & Measurement Conference Exhibition that runs alongside the Technical Conference is a good opportunity for all those involved in the world of laboratories to obtain a technology update. There are still opportunities for suppliers to exhibit and since attendance to the exhibition is independent of the conference, there is added value both for suppliers as well as those wishing only to attend the exhibition.
