Miniature PCB-mounted current transducers

March 2006 Sensors & Transducers

LEM has recently added the HXS series to its range of current transducer families designed to operate from a single 5 V power supply. The new PCB-mounted units measure only 18,5 x 16,5 x 10 mm and integrate a multirange primary conductor.

The pinout on the primary conductor allows the HXS 20-NP to be configured as a 5, 10 or 20 ARMS nominal model and the HXS 50-NP to be configured as a 12,5, 25 or 50 ARMS nominal model, with a measuring span of up to ±3 x IPN. The same pinout is used for both, permitting the same model to be used for a complete range of drives that use the same control PCB.

The internal reference voltage (2,5 V) is provided on a separate pin or can be replaced by an external reference (between 2 and 2,8 V) for reference thermal drift cancellation. With a fixed gain and offset the output can be measured precisely to ±0,625 V at IPN when the reference is used.

A unique LEM ASIC designed for use with open-loop Hall effect technology has been incorporated to provide performance improvements, including better offset and gain drifts and linearity, in addition to an extended operating temperature range (-40 to +85°C and even +105°C with SP2 models).

In a three-phase system, a special model (HXS 20-NP/SP3) configured for differential measurement can recreate the third phase current from the other two-phase currents. In addition, the HXS 20-NP/SP30 is available for applications when electromagnetically induced heating occurs. The transducers are CE marked, conform to the EN 50178 standard and are recognised for industrial applications.
