UPS backup for colliery conveyor controls

Greenside Colliery has ordered six PLC panels to control the operation of conveyors being transferred from a mined-out area to a new area of the mine. Each PLC panel will be equipped with 1 kVA Powerware 9120-1 UPSs. The PLCs will be programmed to handle sequential start-up of the conveyors, as well as tripping and safety circuits.
The UPSs, which will provide backup power for controlled shut-down of the PLCs, as well as for line conditioning, were selected because they offer online double conversion and are suitable to protect PLCs in voltage-unfriendly environments typical of those encountered in heavy industrial areas.
