Absolute encoders with DeviceNet interface

October 2005 Sensors & Transducers

DeviceNet rotary encoders from Fraba Posital are now also available with plug connectors or cable exits, providing new interface alternatives to their proven cap connection units. The company has simultaneously introduced a new heavy-duty encoder version designed for rugged industrial environments or applications in construction site equipment. These robust types provide IP66 and IP67 protection on the shaft and the housing side, respectively.

All heavy-duty encoders feature a pressure equaliser that prevents condensation as well as an integrated T-distributor. Two 5-pin M12 plug connectors allow for easy handling even by non-maintenance personnel. The new DeviceNet encoders provide the full feature set of standard models. They support all DeviceNet functions (Polled Mode, State Mode, Cyclic Mode); rotating direction, resolution, total resolution and preset value can be programmed via the DeviceNet bus. Both the baud rate (125, 250 or 500 kBaud) and MAC-ID are set via explicit messaging.

Project planning and parameterisation can be carried out with any common project planning software - Fraba Posital supplies generic data files for use with any of these tools. The single turn encoder model offers a resolution of 16 bit per revolution. The multiturn version additionally tracks up to 16 384 revolutions (14 bit), yielding a total measuring range of 30 bit. Like all Optocode encoders, the new models work without backup batteries and come in hollow or solid shaft versions.
