Ultra-miniature photoelectric sensor

June 2005 Sensors & Transducers

Banner Engineering is offering its World-Beam Q12 Series ultra-miniature photoelectric sensors. About the same height as a 50c piece and only 8 mm wide, the Q12 is the smallest model in Banner's World-beam Series family of sensors. Completely self-contained, the Q12 features a unique overmoulded design to achieve an IP67 environmental protection rating and withstand the abuses of today's harsh industrial environments. Available in opposed, retro reflective, polarised retro reflective and fixed-field modes, the sensor is capable of sensing ranges up to 2 m. Installation in confined or otherwise challenging locations is simplified with robust, metal-sleeved side mounting holes consistently located on all models as well as an assortment of available brackets.

"The sheer number of sensor choices available to users today is downright confusing. Our sensor family is designed to offer a common platform and simplify the user's sensor selection with the Q12 satisfying the need for a miniature product solution," said Chris Dales, Research & Development product planning manager for Banner Engineering.

Applications

With its miniature size and broad range of available operating modes, World-Beam Q12 Series photoelectric sensors are suitable for a wide variety of applications in the materials handling, packaging, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, document handling and assembly industries, verifying the position of materials or equipment in confined areas, directly on or inside conveyors and automated machinery, and:

* Mapping semiconductor wafers.

* Inspecting products for missing or incorrect components.

* Special glass-lensed polarised units reliably detect shiny targets.

Several features of the World-Beam Q12 make it particularly easy to install and use:

* Models are pre-programmed at the factory, no field adjustments needed.

* Visible red light source for easy target positioning.

* Bring green and amber status LEDs visible from 360°.

* 2 m or 9 m integral, or 150 mm threaded 4-pin Pico-styled pigtail quick-disconnect cable options.

Specifications. The ultra-miniature World-Beam Q12 Series sensors measure just 22 mm long, 8 mm wide and 12 mm deep. All units feature solid-state bipolar outputs, one current sourcing (PNP) and one current sinking (NPN).

A family of easy-to-use vision sensors

World-Beam Series sensors from Banner deliver a universal solution for sensor users who demand a wide range of available sensing modes. They are easy-to-apply, easy-to-use sensors that resist environmental contamination from moisture, dirt, EMI/RFI and crosstalk.
