Latest technology showcased at Process Expo

June 2005 News

Showcasing the latest developments across a wide range of process control equipment and instrumentation, Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) division exhibited at the Process Expo at Kyalami Race Track in the middle of May. A full complement of trained staff was on hand at the busy stand to discuss the technical merits of a comprehensive selection of the company's product offerings.

Products on show ranged from an upgraded process control system, new tuned laser diode, miniaturised gas chromatograph, flowmeter enclosure, reduced size soft starter and a comprehensive series of weighing systems through to the latest technology in micro-automation, Sinamics and Profinet.

Providing some good news for cost-conscious buyers, the new Simatic S7 400 range offers double the memory capacity and processor speed - but at the same price as the previous version. Upgrades to the Simatic PCS7 version 6.1 means that this process control system now runs on Windows XP and includes an integrated plant asset management module.

Recently released for use in power stations, furnace combustion optimisation, continuous environmental monitoring, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and the cement industry, the Siemens LDS 6 tuned laser diode can be mounted on stacks or above the combustion chamber for the determination of oxygen levels, temperature, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid. With a 30 mm laser beam tuned to be absorbed by the specific molecule to be analysed, these 'in-situ' analysers perform analyses in just three seconds, with robust housings that are Eex rated. The analyser unit can be located up to a kilometre away when using fibre-optic connections.

Much less expensive than a standard gas chromatograph, the miniaturised Siemens Microsam measures the qualities of the components of a gas for applications in petrochemical, natural gas or custody transfer. With no moving parts and valveless switching, this instrument is much more reliable in harsh environments. Only 330 mm in diameter and 200 mm thick, the Microsam can be mounted close to the source of the gas to be analysed. It is also an IP65-rated enclosure, so no expensive shelters are required.

The new variation of the original Siemens Mag 6000, the Mag 6000i industrial specification enclosure for electronic flow meters incorporates a switchmode power supply from 18 V d.c. to 200 V a.c. with automatic sensing. This versatile enclosure now includes a touch pad LED display and is available in an Eex version.

The full range of Siemens Siwarex Weighing Systems includes Siemens PLC modules that retrofit onto the Siemens PLC backplane, enabling advanced weighing systems to be connected directly onto the Siemens PLC system. The Siwarex FTA is used for highly exact static weight measurements such as platform scales, container weighers and vehicle scales; the Siwarex U is used for static weight measurements for container weighers and silos; the Siwarex FTC is for belt scales; while the new Siwarex CS works with the Siemens ET200S versatile weighing module for simple weighing applications.

Also at the show, the Siemens 3RW4 series soft starter is a solid-state motor controller with integrated torque control. With built-in characteristics for fan and pump applications, the device is self-protecting with a built-in bypass contactor and overload capabilities. Attractively priced, the drastically reduced size of this soft starter means it can be easily mounted in most panels.
