Modern, compact UPS

The latest Series 9 uninterruptible power system from Meissner Uninterruptible Power combines style and a small footprint with high performance.
Introduced recently to South Africa, the Powerware 9155 has a modern appearance that sets it apart from the computer-grey masses of older equipment usually found in offices and server rooms. It has a black casing and user-friendly, fully graphic, light blue backlit LCD display. Its slim and compact tower design, with a footprint of only 305 x 702 mm, saves floor space. Its makers say that its small size belies its features and performance.
The 9155 provides centralised power protection of server farms, networks, building systems, PC workstations, telecommunication systems, industrial automation and other critical systems. Such systems rely on a high level of power availability against all nine of the most common power disturbances - power failure, sag or surge, under- and over-voltage, switching transients, line noise, frequency variation, and harmonic distortion.
The new UPS features Hot Sync technology, which enables precise load sharing and allows parallel for redundancy and parallel for capacity configurations of UPS without a system level single-point-of-failure.
The 9155 offers output power capability of 0,9 Pf - specifically for compensated servers and communications devices, or more power for no extra cost. The standard battery configuration provides 10 to 15 minutes of backup time, at 10 kVA computer load. This can be extended to well over an hour by adding extra battery packs.
Another of the features of the 9155 is an active IGBT rectifier for controlling the input power factor, without needing an additional, expensive input filter to be 'mains friendly' or 'generator compatible'. This feature results in a THD factor of less than 5%. The device also includes intelligent software and connectivity capabilities that enable monitoring and management of power systems from a desktop, from mobile devices, or through integration with network and building management systems.
As standard, the 9155 features an advanced battery management (ABM) capability that actively controls the battery charging process. This useful feature extends the lifespan of the battery system by up to 50% by charging batteries only when necessary, instead of the constant float charging method.
Meissner supplies the units complete with an external maintenance bypass facility that eliminates unnecessary downtime during UPS service and maintenance. Other options include X-slot expansion cards for enhanced connectivity, ConnectUPS SNMP adapters, 12-pulse rectification, and isolation and voltage adaption transformers.
