Eastern Cape gets high tech roadshow

October 2004 News

Process control instrumentation continues to be a discipline that uses and continually develops products and tools that draw on the cutting edge of technology. Sometimes this development also requires a thorough understanding of the laws of physics, and innovative ways to best utilise these phenomena.

While the average consumer is content to believe that their latest TV sound system or 'state-of-the-art' plug-in for their home computer is the benchmark of technology, most are unaware of the technology that lurks behind the three metre high security fences in grey concrete structures that we in this industry are so accustomed to. This typifies the atmosphere when we take the Control Roadshow to areas like Mossel Bay where the GDP seems to centre around fishing and fun.

Long white beaches, early morning fishing boats, whales close to the shoreline ... focus on 17 August when technology as we know it came to town in the form of the Control Roadshow at the Dias Beach Hotel. The show hosted a display from various suppliers of products from switches to Ethernet-based cameras, valves to fibre-optic technology, measurements ranging from the level in a 10 megalitre vessel - to the thickness of the paint on it. The latest measurement and control technology was displayed to the local community.

Two days later, on 19 August, a second event took place at a now regular annual venue in Port Elizabeth. As this area is somewhat more of a manufacturing and assembly community, as opposed to a process community, we did have a slightly varied profile of exhibitor. The exhibiting suppliers products closely matched the local industry needs, and the show also enjoyed very strong support from local suppliers. Once again the show ran from 12h00 through to 18h00 with a steady stream of visitors throughout the day.

The companies that exhibited in the Eastern Cape this year were:

AC/DC Dynamics, Adroit Technologies, Anglo Allied Engineering, AWR Smith Process Instrumentation, Bürkert Contromatic, Citect Africa, Control Techniques, Endress+Hauser, Flowserve, Ind Auto & Control, Instrotech, Lapp Cable, Laser M, Pall SA, Phoenix Contact, RJ Programmable Techniques, RS Components SA, Schneider Electric, Shorrock Automation, Spescom MeasureGraph, Tapeus Marketing, Temperature Controls, Throughput Technologies, Tyco Valves & Controls, Westplex, Wika Instruments and Yokogawa SA.

Further shows scheduled for 2004 include Vaal Triangle, Kimberley, Lime Acres and Kuruman.
