Smart camera for PC-based vision

September 2004 Sensors & Transducers

As a smart camera that supports the flexibility of PC-based machine vision systems, Iris P-Series is believed to be the first Matrox product of its kind that features hardware for image sensing and a software API application programming interface for image analysis.

Iris P-Series is fully programmable and can be customised by OEMs and integrators for vertical markets such as automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, surveillance, traffic control, and robotics. The camera's vision processing is powered by an ultra low power (ULP) Celeron, an embedded Intel architecture processor. It runs the Windows CE .NET realtime operating system, and is programmed using a version of Microsoft's Visual C++.

What differentiates Iris P-Series from other smart cameras in the marketplace is that OEMs and integrators can develop their applications with the Matrox Imaging Library (MIL), the industry's ultimate toolbox for image processing solutions, and run them directly on Iris P-Series.

Iris P-Series is available in a range of high-fidelity CCD image sensors with square pixels, supporting sub- to mega-pixel resolutions, higher readout or frame rates, and monochrome or colour images. Having these features in a small footprint makes Iris well suited for general manufacturing/inspection applications.

Seeing into the future

Users of Iris P-Series will be able to take full advantage of MIL when developing their applications, especially those that use the Geometric Model Finder and Edge Finder tools. Users will also reap the benefits of new functionality and enhancements in future releases of MIL, such as feature-based OCR. As a product, Iris will be modified for other target audiences, such as manufacturing and process control engineers.

"Matrox Iris P-Series represents a new level of integration for Matrox products," says François Bertrand, director, sales and marketing, Matrox Imaging. "What we are offering to customers is a unique mix of sensor, processing, and software technologies in one package," he adds. Westplex is the South African distributor of Matrox Imaging products.
