Harmonic Group appoints Kenyan distributor

Harmonic Group is working the objective to be at the forefront of bar code scanning acceptance in Africa. "Bar code scanning is in its infancy in Africa. Entering the market early will allow us to grow our market share as a preferred supplier in bar code technology in retail and warehousing," says Harmonic Group managing director, Barry Baetu, who believes that finding the right distributors is a critical factor in implementing this growth strategy. According to Baetu, Impax Business Solutions is one such distributor.

"As an IT projects consultancy, Impax Business Solutions has the right infrastructure and contacts in key African countries, specifically in local government and the corporate space. Being based in Kenya is also an advantage - it is a gateway to East Africa and countries such as Tanzania, Uganda and the DRC. This broad reach is a unique trait that ensures that their focus does not become regionalised as most African players tend to be. Impax Business Solutions is already marketing a host of IT and asset management solutions, and has the capacity to be up and running immediately, thanks to its in-house technical skills," he says.

John Thuo, managing director at Impax Business Solutions, says the Kenyan distributor is now able to offer its customers a combination of products, having incorporated the Harmonic asset management, logistics and warehousing solutions, as well as bar coding offerings. "These are especially exciting times for us since our East African customers are increasingly demanding access control and biometrics solutions, as well as wireless communication and connectivity. In addition to offering our clients asset management and accounting solutions, Harmonic will assist us to enter sophisticated markets such as warehousing, RFID technology and mobile applications."

Since April this year, Harmonic and Impax Business Solutions have had a skills transfer initiative in place that will ensure the Kenyan-based distributor has the technical competency to support the broad range of solutions provided by the Harmonic Group.

Baetu expects many positives to come out of the deal with Impax Business Solutions by year-end. "While there are not many competitors in our field of expertise in Kenya, the relationship with Impax Business Solutions will provide a foundation for us to provide a support structure and technical proficiency level that is world-class," he concludes.
