UPS SNMP adapter

July 2004 Electrical Power & Protection

The Multenet Power Agent, recently released by SAN People, is specifically designed to provide UPS systems that support Ethernet connectivity with network management over multiple standards like HTTP, Telnet and SNMP. The Power Agent connects to the UPS through a standard serial port and supports a number of standard UPS serial protocols, like the Megatec protocol. It is also designed to be adaptable to different proprietary protocols, which can easily be uploaded onto the Agent. The UPS can be accessed via the Power Agent's 10/100Base-T Ethernet connection, hence allowing it to be monitored and remotely managed via a Web interface, and also via SNMP, as defined in the UPS RFC 1628 Standard.

As this product was specifically designed for the UPS industry, SAN People has also developed its own shut-down software, Multenet PowerDown. PowerDown supports a range of operating systems including Windows, Linux, Solaris and Netware. This software will be able to offer a messaging service, and re- programmable timed shutdown for the clients on the network. The Power Agent will also be able to log the UPS event summary for up to 48 hours and forward this data via e-mail to any remote location for storage or further analysis. The Power Agent is able to supply visual readings of current UPS data and alarms, and also broadcast these via e-mails, and informative text pop-ups.
