Profibus Integration representative and director of the Profinet Competence Centre from Furth, Germany, Manfred Popp, Dipl Engineer, was the recent guest speaker at the Profibus user group breakfast held at the Riverside Hotel in Durban. The key points which were addressed at this breakfast conference highlighted 'Modern Industrial Data Communication Profinet'.
Maintaining its position as market leaders in automation, Profibus and the newly developed Profinet have shown their commitment to not only the Natal market, but also on a national level, by showing clients the latest in process automation and plans for the future.
Manfred Popp explained the new developments on Profinet and how the new international standards will progress in the years to come. He also showed how developments have progressed on the IEEE standard of Industrial Ethernet, advancing it to include realtime communication, which has been developed by Profibus International. Profibus has now developed a Proxy for open communication between Profibus and Profinet - a new level of communication, which also includes the other systems like Profisafe and Profidrive. This offers the possibility of expanding on existing networks to include new developments and technology. This proxy is not limited to Profibus, but also allows other fieldbus systems to connect for a total system solution.
The breakfast was supported and sponsored by major international companies who are developing this open communication protocol, namely: Siemens, ABB, Endress+Hauser, Lapp Cable, Phoenix Contact, Burkert, Festo, SEW, CBI Automation. Profibus has a comprehensive installation base where success has been achieved with companies like Mondi, Sappi, Illovo Sugar, Toyota, Ushaka and other major organisations.
