When the mass of a rotor is small (15% or less) compared to the mass of the stator, the sensitivity of seismic vibration monitoring at the bearings is poor. In such cases, and in particular for white metal bearings, it is recommended that the displacement of the rotating shaft be monitored.
For sensing shaft displacement and generating a proportional 4 to 20 mA signal, a selection of Metrix probes and probe drivers/transmitters are available from PREI Instrumentation. All Metrix proximity probes have ATEX Certification. Also available are direct replacements for the 3000, 3300 and 7200 series Bentley Nevada probes, which have been phased out. The probe cables can be 5 m or 9 m long, and the 4 to 20 mA signal can be selected to correspond to a peak-to-peak displacement of 0-75, 125 or 250 microns.
In addition to radial vibration, non-contact proximity probes can monitor axial position (thrust) within a range of 0,5 to 4,5 mm, and also shaft speeds up to 100 000 rpm. This 2-wire system is simple to install, and enables monitoring to be performed on a remote PC. Test terminals are provided to access the raw signal, which consists of a DC component for setting the probe gap (8 mV/micron) and an AC component for local vibration analysis.
