Redox sensors with ion traps

May 2004 Sensors & Transducers

The Dynaprobe II series of pH and redox sensors provide an extended service life in difficult aggressive measurement applications, by incorporating a series of overlapping ion traps in the reference electrode.

These ion traps impede the flow of contaminating ions from the process liquid especially when the sensor is subjected to elevated temperatures and pressures that can be found in certain processes for eg: chemical processing applications, wastewater applications, pulp and paper applications and sugar processing. These are applications where there are high levels of sulphides.

A normal or typical pH sensor is constructed from a glass measurement electrode and reference electrode. 80% of pH sensor failures can be attributed to the failure of the reference electrode. The reason this happens is because the sensor's chemistry is exposed to the process via a liquid junction.

The Dynaprobe II has a liquid junction fabricated from a single core, which is saturated with conductive electrolyte, which reduces clogging and coating of the reference. There is also a series of overlapping baffles that act as ion traps and impede the migration of ions into the sensor. This prevents premature failure of the reference junction.

The dynaprobe sensors are available in a variety of formats to suit most applications, and all the Dynaprobe II sensors are available with a choice of built-in temperature sensors for automatic temperature compensation to suit most manufacturers' pH instruments, as well as a choice of cable lengths and termination options. These sensors are also available with different types of reference junctions.
