Eliminating impact torque breakdowns

In situations where electric motors are required to drive large reduction gearboxes that are coupled to the driving machinery, the torque magnification through the gearbox on sudden load demands can be extremely high. Most electric motors are capable of producing two to three times their rated torque.

Similar situations often occur in other industries and frequently lead to mechanical failure of chains, couplings, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, V-belts and even gearboxes. Mechanical shear pins are generally unreliable.

A variety of products for solving such problems are available from NewElec. They are capable of substantially disconnecting the supply to the electric motor within 100 ms before the motor reaches its breakdown torque.
