Breathing new life into an old UPS

December 2003 Electrical Power & Protection

Meissner has introduced the customer-orientated incoming gate bipolar transistor upgrade card (IGBT) for its MP3000MKI range, breathing new life into an existing uninterruptible power supply (UPS) product. "Users of the MP3000MKI have had reliable service from their UPSs for a number of years but, with the technological advancements that have taken place over the last couple of years, critical components for this range have become scarce," says Graham Beyleveld, Meissner sales director. "The result is that UPS clients are, in many cases, faced with the need to replace their power protection equipment at a high cost."

Meissner's new inverter IGBT drive card is backward compatible allowing even a single-phase inverter power assembly in a three-phase unit to be upgraded to IGBT technology. The remaining two inverter assemblies can be upgraded at a later stage as and when required. "This," says Beyleveld, "dramatically extends the useful life of older Meissner UPS units and means that a unit that has reached the end of its life can now be used for a longer period without being completely replaced." He confirms that bipolar transistor technology has been superseded by IGBT technology and suppliers of the bipolar transistors can no longer source or supply these devices. "As bipolars were the main power transistors for the inverter bridges in all fifth generation UPSs these can no longer be repaired. However, clients who initially chose the Meissner MP3000MKI can now extend the operating lives of their units through this new innovation."
