Electrical Power & Protection

User-friendly protection relays

December 2003 Electrical Power & Protection

NewElec's N series motor protection relays provide flexibility to meet most low voltage application requirements from 5 to 550 A. Five models are available with protection features ranging from basic overload protection for both cyclic and sustained conditions, together with single phasing protection, to earth leakage protection with a sensing threshold of 250 mA.

Certain models in the range facilitate the transmission of the motor status and trip conditions to a remote control room, while running stall protection with a 100 ms trip time is featured in the latter models. All other models have locked rotor protection where the trip time will be a function of the remaining motor thermal capacity at the occurrence of the incident. A built-in motor load transducer in the form of a 4 to 20 mA output loop is able to serve as an analog input for a PLC.

All models can be mounted either on a chassis plate or on an MCC cubicle door. The range permits the selection of a NewElec current transformer module block that comprises three current transformers in a neat space-saving enclosure. On models where earth leakage protection is offered, a core balance current transformer is included in the compact CT block design.

All relays in the range permit a cold thermal trip curve selection of between 2,5 to 32,5 seconds at six times motor full load current, while the corresponding hot curve will be restricted to 33% of the cold curve selection. Type 2 co-ordination is maintained throughout the range. This selection of curves renders the relay useful for straightforward DOL starting of small to large motors, as well as star delta or soft starting configurations for the purpose of control and starting of high inertia loads. The relays are configured fail-safe and are equipped with fault retentive LEDs, even in the event of a power failure. An auto/manual overload trip reset selector switch is available together with a testing facility, which can easily be used to test the accuracy of the relay on planned maintenance days.
