Flow Measurement & Control

Complete flow solution

October 2003 Flow Measurement & Control

A complete flow solution that supports the user in the best possible way from planning, through commissioning and configuration, all the way to diagnosis and maintenance, was what instrumentation specialist Endress + Hauser aimed for, and believes it achieved, in the development of its Proline series of instruments.

Numerous sensor-specific software tools were developed for the different flow measurement technologies, providing optimum support to the user in all phases. Cost and time-savings were the primary considerations in making the instruments easy to use. The end result is a product line that allows effortless planning, commissioning and management of a flow solution that fits the application.

The practically oriented concept consists of Applicator for selection and specification of the flowmeters, Fieldtool for flexible on-site administration and FieldCheck with comfortable test and diagnosis functions.

With Applicator, all parameters important for the specification of a measuring point are queried step-by-step, with the operator entering application limits and selecting fluid types. Applicator will then suggest suitable instruments for the application. Comments and warning messages assist in the correct selection, helping to avoid errors and facilitate optimisation of the measuring point in line with specific requirements. The latest version of Applicator is available for download from the Internet in various languages.

The modular FieldTool software package, a uniform configuration and service program, enables complete on-site configuration of all new Proline series flowmeters and also supports the user with commissioning and troubleshooting.

With the Fieldview module allowing the visualisation or process values, the selection of expansion modules is also practical. A module for maintenance analysis facilitates preventative measures, avoiding downtime.

To support the user in terms of safety and reliable operation, Endress + Hauser completes the tooling concept with a powerful test and simulation instrument, with which all Proline series flowmeters can be tested directly in the plant. Using an integrated interface, FieldCheck directly reads flowmeter data without having to be reconfigured repeatedly.

The test and simulation instrument consists of the actual signal generator, as well as connectors and adapters for different measuring systems and transmitter outputs. All instrument components are contained in a protective case, ensuring that all is readily available on site. A built-in, high-performance, rechargeable battery enables battery operation over extended periods. FieldCheck's real value in terms of time and cost savings becomes especially apparent in applications where, for example, ISO 9000 requires more regular calibration and test cycles.

To ensure a smooth transition into the future of flow measurement technology, Endress + Hauser has made its electromagnetic flowmeters compatible with predecessor models. A thought-through building block system, to which different sensors belong, makes for easy adaptation to the given application. At the same time, the user benefits from an improved price/performance ratio, many optional software functions and flexible input and output modules - which can also be retrofitted.
