Spescom MeasureGraph sponsors third Annual Power Quality Summit
September 2003
News
The 3rd Annual Power Quality Summit was held recently in Johannesburg. The 3-day summit attracted engineers, power technicians and specialists, power supply managers and chief electricians from the southern African region.
Spescom MeasureGraph (SMG), official sponsor of the Summit, had two speakers address delegates. John Wilson, SMG's managing director, addressed the issue of 'Power quality: the metrologist's point of view'. Essentially he questioned whether the methodology of measuring power based on pure sinusoidal waveforms as opposed to deformed waveform requiring mathematical validation was valid, given today's realities.
Trevor Leong, product specialist at SMG, spoke on the subject of "Measurement trends: full disclosure". He questioned whether there was a wrong way to carry out power quality analysis and suggested that possibly a combination of old and new methods would give a more representative picture.
Robert Koch, power quality manager at Eskom, presented a case study entitled 'Assessing standards governing the power industry both locally and internationally, best practices and benchmarking techniques to enhance power quality and service to your customers'. He also led a one-day, practical workshop on the subject of 'A new era in power quality management'. Delegates reviewed the roles of various stakeholders in the process of managing power quality and assessed the impact of the NER's regulatory framework. Delegates were able to establish standards and assess what could be done for companies whilst analysing supply contracts and reviewing technology options.
Other eminent speakers in the field of power quality who delivered papers on their specialist areas were Johan Bekker, principal engineer: Planning and Quality of Supply, Nampower - Namibia; Pravesh Balgobind, Licensing and Compliance, National Electricity Regulator; Stephen Delport, Head of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Ekhurleni Municipality; Marcus Kneen, managing director, Marcus Kneen and part-author, NER Power Quality Directive; Richard Goodland, editor, Quality Power Magazine; Hermann Oelsner, managing director, Darling IPP; Paul Johnson, engineer, Eskom; Philip Konig, senior systems engineer, Siemens; Phumzile Tshelane, technology strategy manager, PBMR; Dave Johnson, Department of Electrical Engineering, University Of Cape Town.
Spescom MeasureGraph, a division of JSE-listed Spescom, is a leading local supplier of test and measurement solutions to industry.
