Fugitive emissions monitoring for instant indication of leaky valve-packing

August 2003 Sensors & Transducers

Recent amendments to legislation regarding atmospheric pollution control will have a major impact on chemical manufacturers and end-users. The control of fugitive emissions for industrial processing equipment has become a primary concern. The provision of early warning of packing deterioration in rotary and linear valves has now become economically feasible through the integration of Westlock's EM300 fugitive emissions monitor.

The monitor, a 300 class pressure sensor, is capable of displaying the status locally and remotely. When used in combination with double packing or bellows seal control valves, the device can immediately detect any very low-pressure build-up due to leaks.

The design incorporates an Inconel 600 diaphragm in a well-engineered enclosure for sensitive, low level measuring - proof and burst measures are considerably above the low sensing levels.

Manufactured for a myriad of chemically compatible applications, the sensor enclosure has a double hermetic seal and is constructed of 316 stainless steel. Both the pressure measurement and sensor assembly areas are independently hermetically sealed from one another and the environment. The sensor compensates for changes in temperature by using fluctuations in internal gas pressure to alter the trip points according to the universal gas law.

Designed for compatibility with the existing line of Westlock products, the EM300, with an optional local LED indicator, may be internally integrated with the Accutrak, Eliminator or Quantum configurations of rotary valves and MOD3 and Epic configuration on linear control valves.

The unit is also available for manually controlled valves. Designed as a single unit, it has its own junction housing which has: UL/CSA listed Class I, Groups B, C and D, Class II, Groups E, F and G - divisions 1 and 2 classification.
