Pressure gauge users and installers will be aware that, except when using a parallel thread with a union fitting, the pressure gauge comes fully tight in a position that typically, according to Murphy's Law, faces the wrong way.
One could then:
1. Ease it back a fraction of a turn, and hope that the leakage will not cause too much of a problem. Who cares about VOCs anyway?
2. Find a bigger spanner, apply additional brute force, and force it to the desired position. It many cases this will cause galling of the threads, resulting in the pressure gauge and isolating valve having to be scrapped.
3. Use the new Swivemas connection from Stewart Buchanan, now available through Blanes Pressure Solutions.
The Swivemas joint is a proprietary metal-to-metal joint using coned faces and a loose compression collar. The collar is turned, not the gauge. No thread tape is required. The joint requires matching parts on the gauge and the isolating valve. Many types of isolating valve are available, including needle or ball, flanged, screwed, double block and bleed, etc. Material traceability is maintained, and MR 01-75 certification is available for sour applications.
A bleed hole is used as a telltale to indicate incorrect mating while maintaining the mechanical integrity of the joint, which can be broken and re-made many times.
