In a significant deal worth approximately R28 million, Siemens Southern Africa has been awarded a contract for the upgrade of medium voltage switchgear at Arnot Power Station, Eskom's first modern coal-fired power station, which was made fully operational in 1975. The contract relates to Units 1, 2, 3; Station Board 3; Sub-Station Boards 1A/2A and 1B/2B; as well as Boiler Boards 1A/1B, 2A/2B, 3A/3B.
Ronnie Naidoo of Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution, says that although the initial contract value was R16 million, increased scope of supply saw this figure grow to approximately R28 million, with expected completion scheduled for May 2005.
"The scope of the project makes provision for the design, manufacture, quality assurance, testing, supply, delivery, off-loading, erection, site testing and commissioning of new, fully developed and internal arc type tested 3 Phase metal clad switchgear and switchgear protection systems," he says. "This contract also includes extensive training on all aspects of the switchgear for the engineering, maintenance and operating personnel." The switchgear includes Siemens type 8BF00/8BF01 panels rated at 3,3/12 kV, 25 kA, 31,5 kA and 40 kA, and are fully type tested as per IEC 298 and Eskom's NRS003 specifications.
