An off-the-shelf, entry level, radar level measurement device from VEGA was found to be a suitable solution for an aggressive chemical environment.
At Bayer CropScience in the UK, problems were being encountered on a vent scrubber vessel at its agrochemical intermediate plant. Caustic spray is used to clean waste vapours from the process, where a turbulent liquid surface causes heavy vapours.
Problems were encountered with crystallisation of this caustic solution, which resulted in regular dip pipe blockages and hence, unreliable level measurement using the original D.P. 'bubbler' level system. The downtime associated with this loss of level measurement was unacceptable, so alternative technologies were investigated.
VEGA's new PULS 41 compact, non-contact 2-wire radar was mounted in the polypropylene bypass tube and was installed using the existing cabling, allowing production to be virtually unaffected. As with all VEGA's radar, the 'pulse' comes with full software and performance capability. Says Sean Hannon, instrumentation engineer at Bayer CropScience, "We see radar as a reliable first line level measurement, and our experience from using VEGA's products confirms this."
VEGA's PULS 41 was used as an everyday device for an everyday application on a chemical process plant, proving reliable, cost effective and easy to apply, install and set up.
