Vibration measurement now as convenient as temperature measurement

May 2003 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

The new IQ Instruments Model 2300 vibration transmitter makes it easy to provide vibration monitoring alongside traditional temperature monitoring on rotating machinery.

The Model 2300 is supplied in a standard KH type thermocouple head with a single stud mounting. This makes it easy to mount anywhere a thermocouple can be mounted. No special training or equipment is necessary.

The output is 4-20 mA, loop powered, in exactly the same way as industry temperature transmitters. Anyone who can fit and wire a thermocouple can now install a vibration transmitter.

The device is a self-contained instrument designed to measure vibration in industrial machinery such as fans, blowers, pumps and compressors. It is a true two-wire loop-powered instrument. When used with other IQ products indication, alarm and trip functions can be provided to form a cost-effective machine protection system.

An internally mounted accelerometer is the primary measuring element, the output of which is amplified and integrated to obtain an output proportional to velocity.

The design ensures correct operation over a wide variation in supply voltage.

Care has been taken to ensure reliable long-term stability and accuracy without the need for periodic maintenance.

The accelerometer and encapsulated electronics are mounted in a robust weatherproof cast aluminium housing with a rating of IP65.

The entire head is mounted at the point of excitation using the locking nut to ensure correct alignment.

The standard version has the accelerometer isolated from ground. The units are thus suitable for use with PLCs and other applications where ground loops may be a problem.
