SAIMC: elevating the automation, instrumentation, and control industry

August 2013 SAIMC

Following the strategic meeting held in May 2013, the industry stakeholders and council of the SAIMC have made a unanimous decision to grow C&I proficiency and skills in the industry, become a catalyst for stakeholders, enhance members status recognition, have input into standards that impact C&I practitioners and ultimately ensure the C&I profession becomes one of the recognised disciplines in the Engineering Council of South Africa. We understand that in order for the SAIMC to be a successful organisation, our members have to be equally successful in their business.

The "Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control" (SAIMC) has been the voice for the southern African Control and Instrumentation (C&I) industry for over 50 years, having represented its members in various national and international forums.

As a result of rapidly evolving technologies and the close link of C&I systems to business success, the SAIMC has seen the role of Control and Instrumentation practitioners become more critical within organisations. It is with this thought that the SAIMC is endeavouring to increase their market presence within the industry, by taking vital game changing decisions at a recent strategy meeting.

"In order to fortify the C&I engineering discipline in South Africa, the SAIMC decided to create a fresh new look and feel to the brand image, to reposition us as a progressive, creative, innovative, transparent society, working towards uplifting automation, instrumentation and control to an official engineering discipline," explains Vinesh Maharaj, President of the SAIMC.

Through this repositioning, the SAIMC is looking forward to reshaping the perception of the C&I engineering discipline at school and university levels and establishing C&I engineering development programmes. To achieve this, the SAIMC will focus on engaging with ECSA and Government to recognise the C&I as a separate engineering discipline. Furthermore, the SAIMC is determined to provide mentorship programmes and partner with various learning and industrial organisations to provide suitable mentors in this field.

The SAIMC PR (Public Relations) Team comprising of Vinesh Maharaj, Selvan Murugan (Project Manager), Mothibi Thabeng, Steven Meyer, Johan Maartens and Jane van der Spuy have worked together with rebranding organisation Cubic Ice to develop the new brand.

The rebranding process included redesigning the SAIMC logo as well as the SAIMC website. With regards to the logo, the SAIMC incorporated elements from the original coat of arms and re-created it to suit a contemporary, high-tech and younger market. The new logo brings together the four disciplines the association represents, namely: Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control and by embodying the core values which are communication, a fruitful environment, and open and transparent upliftment standards. The organisation going forward, will simply be known as the "SAIMC"

About the SAIMC: The SAIMC is a registered Voluntary Association with The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), is a contributing member of The Automation Federation and is a founding member of The South African Council for Automation and Control. The SAIMC has served the needs of its members and stakeholders from various corporate companies in the development of the measurement and control industry. The SAIMC's successful partnership with Southern African Instrumentation and Control magazine as its official media partner has enabled The SAIMC to reach C&I professionals throughout southern Africa.

A new SAIMC website design will further reflect the new and modern approach of the SAIMC that will in turn interest more members and keep SAIMC in line with the international standard of the society. The new website is hosted on a fully fledged content management system and provides our member with SAIMC and branch information as well as a collaborative platform for the sharing of information via live chat. The registration process has also been automated allowing potential members to register online.
