Legislation sets energy management pace
October 2011
News
Only two months after the international release of ISO 50001, the Energy Management Standard, Energy Cybernetics in conjunction with DQS launched the first ISO 50001 course in Port Elizabeth during August.
The need to comply with legislation is driving the demand from top management to manage energy use so that ISO 50001 certification can be achieved along with the various environmental standards. Many of the delegates belong to organisations that have already made a start towards becoming energy efficient and reduced their reliance on the grid by the required 10%. They are now seeking further opportunities for energy savings.

Delegates from various automotive manufacturers in the region attended and ranged from environmental managers experienced in ISO 14001 to plant engineers and energy department personnel that hold the portfolio of implementing energy efficiency and sustainable development practices. A misconception prevailed that an energy manager is a temporary position within an organisation and once savings have been achieved there is no further service required. However, ISO 50001 requires documentation and continuous training and management in the manner of financial accounting systems.
Energy management forces the company to look at how much energy it uses, where it is using it, what drives the high usage areas and equipment, who within the organisation influences energy use and which areas and systems warrant further investigation.
