Making a mark in process instrumentation

October 2003 Flow Measurement & Control

Siemens has significantly bolstered its offering in the field of process instrumentation with the acquisition of the Danfoss Flow Division. The company now has a complete basket of international market-leading products in process instrumentation to offer the South African and African markets.

Siemens has targeted the field of process instrumentation as one of the biggest growth sectors in the industry, and the company has to date invested one billion euros worldwide, buying out businesses to grow its market presence in this field. The company's process instrumentation services all industries, including mining aggregate cement, wastewater - water, food and beverage, and petrochemical.

With a rich heritage of global technological innovation, Siemens brings to the market many offerings in areas:

* Pulsed AC and DC mag flowmeters (the company's recent purchase of the Flow Division of Danfoss has significantly strengthened its presence in this area).

* Hydrostatic, ultrasonic and radar levels.

* Temperature.

* Pressure.

* Mass (dynamic).

* Static weighing.

* Analytics for gas, solids and liquids (Siemens has also purchased Applied Automation, world-leaders in gas chromatographs).

* Continuous and switching capacitance levels; and market leading smart positioners, as well as recorders, controllers and indicators. These all come with a variety of BUS options.

Siemens recently launched some new products in these areas, such as the Sitrans LR200 radar unit - the first two-wire-loop-powered pulse radar unit to be manufactured by Siemens - and the Sitrans LR400 high frequency FMCW radar. Siemens believes that both these instruments have, in their short time on the market, revolutionised the measuring of liquids and solids, particularly in the robust conditions of the mining aggregate cement industry. The LR 400 has already shown significant success in this industry in several test applications with Lafarge Cement and Natal Portland Cement (NPC), as well as the fly ash silos at Matla Power Station. The advantage of these instruments is their ability to penetrate dust and take a high-performance measurement, enabling companies to measure levels with the accuracies not achieved before.

In the capacitance field, Siemens is offering the Sitrans LC300, a two-wire-loop-powered instrument for level measurement of liquids, solids and slurries; and SITRANS LC500, a two-wire-loop-powered instrument with HART communication for level measurement of liquids, solids, interface and foam detection, which can be used at high temperature and pressure rates; and the PD500 flow-through capacitance switch, all of which perform interface and continuous switching. The new Profibus PA capacitance switch has an active shield, which can digitally provide a reading of the build-up of product on the probe via LCD display. Siemens' success in this area has seen Sasol install an LC500 capacitance probe on its ammonia carbonate vessels, as the device has been found to be suitable for accurately measuring such an awkward medium. Ammonia carbonate solidifies at low temperatures and runs at a high pressure and high temperature - these parameters are critical to the process.

Siemens' process instrumentation works at bringing new levels of service to the market. The company has established a service centre for all instrumentation at its offices in Rooihuiskraal, offering after-sales service and local repairs - for instrumentation both under warranty and outside of warranty. Siemens has also signed service agreements with Germany and Canada, the latter being the home base of its ultrasonic and radar products. The company has regional offices throughout South Africa and Africa, and boasts a significant distributor network.
