Building scalable hydrogen energy solutions

June 2026 Electrical Power & Protection

Siemens has announced that H2 Core Systems, a startup focused on modular hydrogen-based energy systems, is using the Siemens Xcelerator platform to design and manufacture compact, highly efficient hydrogen energy systems that generate and store clean energy where it is needed.

H2 Core Systems is leveraging Siemens’ Designcenter X Solid Edge software as the backbone of its fully digital product development process, enabling it to design and visualise its products in 3D before physical production. The digital workflow has enabled it to reduce production time by 50%, speed up design and customisation cycles by 20% and achieve an overall growth rate of 70%. Designcenter X Solid Edge, in combination with the cloud-based collaboration capabilities of Siemens’ Teamcenter Share app, allows the team to create marketing assets and technical documentation, and aids communication of complex design concepts clearly to customers and stakeholders.

H2 Core Systems also takes advantage of Siemens’ automation hardware and software, including S7 1200 compact PLCs and TIA Portal, to develop and implement the automation its complex products required. Founded in 2019 and based in Heide, Germany, H2 Core Systems develops, manufactures and maintains modularly configurable production, storage and energy systems that combine electrolysis with storage, compression, fuel cells and everything around a hydrogen-based ecosystem. Designed to be flexible, expandable and scalable alongside on-grid use, its products are perfect for combination with photovoltaic or wind power systems in a decentralised, self-sufficient and green energy supply that can be used worldwide.

“In our role as an accelerator of the energy transition, we need to respond to individual requirements promptly and with modular, scalable energy systems,” said Ulf Jörgensen, chief executive officer of H2 Core Systems. “This acceleration is based on fully digitalised, dynamic and efficient collaboration between sales, engineering, production and documentation. Siemens Xcelerator enables this collaboration and significantly reduces our time to market.”

“Siemens Xcelerator, including Designcenter and Teamcenter, is built to help companies like H2 Core Systems design and collaborate more efficiently by allowing them to visualise the complete product in 3D, collaborate seamlessly with stakeholders from anywhere, and from any device, make informed design changes before production starts, saving time and money. This speeds the development of new solutions, allows greater innovation and enables customisation based on customer needs,” said Joe Bohman, executive vice president of PLM Products at Siemens Digital Industries Software. “Siemens’ technologies help them reduce complex steps and deliver sustainable energy systems quickly to communities that need them.”

A recent project saw H2 Core Systems design and build a fully autonomous energy system for a school in Niger. The result is an independent, emission-free power supply where solar energy is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The green hydrogen produced is stored, and can later be converted back into electricity when needed, resulting in an independent, emission-free power supply without diesel, without unstable grids, and without long fossil fuel supply chains.

“By combining modular hydrogen energy systems with Siemens’ advanced software and automation hardware, we can continue to deliver sustainable energy solutions worldwide, quickly adapting to customer needs and scaling our impact,” says Thorsten Claussen, head of mechanical engineering at H2 Core Systems. “We use Designcenter X Solid Edge to fully digitise our dynamic product and production planning. Thanks to the innovative solutions for distributed teams and high variability, we can significantly accelerate our development processes and production preparations and considerably reduce the time to market of our hydrogen-based energy systems.”
