The Durban branch held its November Technology Evening on 2 November at the Durban Country Club, as usual. The evening was kindly sponsored by ifm, where Ralph White, product specialist for the Octavis condition monitoring product range, gave an interesting presentation titled ‘Introduction to condition monitoring vibration analysis’.

The illustrated talk on how vibration analysis can be used to determine the condition of industrial machines; the underlying principles, application methods and the sources of vibration, was well received and the audience found the live demonstration of equipment and methods particularly interesting. Ralph was well qualified to present on this subject. After obtaining his Diploma, he moved into the specialist field of vibration analysis, for which he is a Technical Associates Level 2 (ISO category 3) Vibration Specialist. He is also a qualified thermographer and has been trained on bearing maintenance and technology. The meeting was well attended, and afterwards, the usual dinner and networking opportunities were enjoyed by all.
