SAIMC: From the President's desk

July 2016 SAIMC

As we slowly pull off from the winter grip, I would like to share some good news. The good news is that we are two months away from the annual SAIMC Gala Dinner. As we experienced in the past year, tickets will be selling fast. Please contact Ina Maartens on [email protected] immediately, if you have not confirmed your bookings to avoid disappointment. Attend and be one of the first to hear about yet another exciting development in the SAIMC’s quest to be the voice of automation in Africa.

Collaboration with regulatory bodies

We have carefully looked at the draft of the new legal metrology regulation and have addressed needed clarifications with the trade and industry minister Dr. Rob Davies. I would like to thank Gary friend, Rowan Humphries, IIG members and other control and instrumentation (C&I) representative for their input in this regard.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dirk van der Walt (SAIMC Vaal branch vice chairman) as the newly elected SABS (C&I category) specification development technical committee chairman.

Collaboration with academic institutions

On 18 May, the SAIMC, represented by Vinesh Maharaj, honoured the yearly tradition of presenting a lecture on the automation industry to undergraduate students at the University of Pretoria. We would like to extend this to other educational institutions as this helps the graduates to understand what they must expect when they enter the industry as employees. For the institutions that are interested in this offering, please contact our secretary, Ina Maartens, at [email protected]. The lecture covers the following topics:

Oratile Sematle.
Oratile Sematle.

• What is automation & control Engineering (A&C)?

• What comprises an automation and control system?

• What is advanced process control?

• What does an A&C engineer do?

• Management Information Systems (MIS/MES).

• The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

And lastly, the role of SAIMC as a mediator amongst industry, educational institutions and individual members, end users and A&C suppliers.

Until I write to you again, keep safe!

Oratile Sematle, President.
