SAIMC: Durban branch

July 2015 SAIMC

The June technology evening was kindly sponsored by Adroit Technologies and the promise of an in-depth presentation on 'Situational Awareness through high performance HMI design', drew record attendance. Dean Gibson, international technical & commercial support engineer at Adroit Technologies was well qualified to take the audience through the subject, as he has spent the last 12 years specialising in scada and automation solutions for a wide range of industries including (but not limited to) water, mining, power and telecommunications.

Branch chairman Howard Lister (right) is seen thanking Dean for his interesting presentation.

He took us through the concept that performance is delivered through smart controls that deliver rich information around specific important process points. Short-term trends, level indicators that are rich in information, give operators the necessary information needed to control the process. Based on the ISA-101 standards, the new graphic design is unobtrusive and focused on delivering high performance where 'less is more'. This new thinking on our outdated historical approach is one where a design engineer approaches scada and HMI designs with the big picture in mind. This delivers a far better awareness of a control system into the hands of the operators, which allows them to then make timeous decisions around running efficiently.
