Most level measurement is concentrated on points, as much of it is centred on the measurement of liquids in containers. Solids are different as they do not lie conveniently flat. Greg Christison of Allpronix walked us through how this problem can be overcome through 3D measurement of bulk solids and presented how a previously difficult measurement problem can be overcome by changing from level to volume measurement using 3D level scanners.
Eric Carter (left) presents Greg with the SAIMC certificate.
Typical applications of solid level measurement are silos and open bins, applicable mainly to the chemical, food, power stations, metals (steel industry), cement, plastics, aggregates and mining. These generally pose a harsh (dust) environment for traditional measurement techniques. Greg explained how the new 3D level APM technology with three transducers work through dust penetration to provide accurate volume measurement with self-cleaning which offers a competitive advantage against the traditional.
Currently the market requires accurate and continuous volume for inventory management and accounting purpose, also early warnings such as adhesion of materials to the walls or alerts of unexpected emptying of the silo.
The branch thanks Greg for his valued and informative presentation.
