The August Technology Evening was hosted by Aveng and presented by Colin Malan, business manager for Emerson Rosemount, South and East Africa. The topic was titled ‘Wireless – imagine the possibilities’. Colin has vast experience in process measurement and has been in the industry since the early, ‘80s and was geared up for the well- attended presentation. He started off with an introduction on industrial wireless and gave examples of the conventional way of wiring vs. the wireless way. Colin showed how easily a company can save on installation costs and simplify installation and maintenance, as well as discussing several applications for wireless.

Colin went on to explain the various types of wireless networks, how they can be incorporated into a wired system. He also addressed several barriers to successful adoption of wireless, mainly security and reliability. He even went on to explain that the wireless systems are even more secure and reliable compared to the wired system. Colin also explained the technologies employed in wireless systems such as 128 bit encryption, channel hopping and gave considerations for wireless installations and applications. The presentation was engaging and was well received by all the members who attended.
