The June Technology Evening was held at the Eskom Marketing Centre in Edgemead. It was another interesting topic, relevant to the current developments in our industry, ‘The Internet of Things: Industrial solutions for Machine to Machine (M2M) applications’ presented by Malcolm Heathfield of Adroit Technologies. The main topics discussed were:

* The Internet of Things (IoT): A scenario in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data over a network.

* Cloud computing: A model of network computing where applications run on a connected server or servers rather than on a local computing device. It can either be private, public, or hybrid.

* Machine-To-Machine Technology (M2M): This enables networked devices to exchange information and perform actions without the assistance of humans.

Malcolm noted that there are three types of services in cloud computing that one can choose from, depending on the strategy: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). The benefits and growth of the Internet, and the resultant services were discussed. The Internet is contributing to the growth of M2M devices and Malcolm referred to Machina that estimates M2M connections will grow from 2 billion to 18 billion during the period from 2013 to 2022.

The branch thanks Malcolm and Adroit for their support.
