The branch held its April Technology Evening at the Eskom Marketing Centre in Edgemead. The presentation was titled: ‘Automating heliostat fields in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants’, presented by Professor Willie Smit from the University of Stellenbosch. It was an interesting presentation, which was also different from the usual topics that are covered at the Technology Evenings. Topics covered included:

* CSP plants in general.
* Open-loop control of heliostats.
* Heliostat calibration.
* Pose estimation of autonomous ground vehicle.
* Accurate position control of quad-rotor.
The next Technology Evenings are as follows:
* Thursday 22 May: Lightning and surge protection by Phoenix Contact.
* Thursday 19 June: Machine-to-Machine Internet of Things by Adroit.
The branch is also organising a CPD training course on the subject: ‘SAIMC PCI Measuring Principles Product Training’. This will be held from 2–6 June and SAIMC Members get a 10% discount on every module. There are five modules to select from over the five days training programme, each accredited for 1 ECSA CPD point.
