Inline measurement in chemical process monitoring and control
December 2019
Sensors & Transducers
For reasons of quality and safety, the control of processes in the chemical industry is essential. The monitoring should be done directly in the process, continuously, and on a real-time basis. Modern technology can provide reliable methods that measure inline any time sample data becomes necessary, saving both time and money. Such fast reactions to process changes can avoid under or over dosing can be avoided and defective batches eliminated, which reduces both production costs and manpower requirements.
Density and concentration measurement
There are different measuring methods to measure concentration, which vary in suitability. The sonic velocity method can withstand tough process conditions, putting it among the most accurate
measuring techniques for a variety of chemical processes.
The liquisonic system by SensoTech consists of a forked sensor and a controller, with a variety of choices available depending on the process conditions. Installed directly in the pipeline, the sensor can collect data immediately for transmission via the controller.
The measuring principle is based on runtime measurement during which a sonic velocity is detected. Depending on the characteristics of the substance under measurement, there will be a change in the sonic velocity. Many customers have been encouraged by the use of this type of measuring method, as it is reliably temperature compensated, user-friendly, and maintenance free.
In addition to the measurement of density and concentration, phase interface detection is possible, as well as the monitoring of chemical reactions such as polymerisation and crystallisation.
