On 19 October the Johannesburg branch held a visit to the Endress+Hauser Pyrotemp factory. The tour started with an interesting presentation outlining the history of the facility and the changes the company faced to become part of the Global Endress+Hauser group. From there we followed the manufacturing process of a thermocouple, something most people take for granted. One of the more interesting facts was the amount of manual labour used in the manufacturing process of these devices.
E+H Pyrotemp used the opportunity to show off some of its new purchases, one of them being the latest in laser engravers – the first of its kind in South Africa. Willie Hendriks of Informed Engineering had this to say after the tour, “I would just like to say thank you, this was really interesting and we all learned something new. I thought I already had a good understanding, but was fortunate to be able to learn more. I was amazed at the technology behind it all.”
All in all it was an interesting afternoon, technology and friendship was enjoyed by all.
Social evening – Gilroys Brewery
In October, instead of our usual Technical Evening the branch decided to join the Beer Fest theme and we headed out to Gilroys Brewery in Muldersdrift. Gilroys is known for its award winning Craft beers by brew master Steve Gilroy. The evening consisted of a humorous look at the myths, legends and secrets of beer. We learned how beer is created, smelled the hops, tasted the grains and explored the brewing process.
Every tour of Gilroys ends with the traditional salute.
We would like to thank those who joined us for the evening and a big Thank you to Allpronix who sponsored a bus to get people from Rivonia to the brewery and back again.
